Hossein Attar Jannesar Nobari: A Request for Iran to Join the MICHELIN Guide
To: The Presidency of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, and the relevant Iranian tourism authorities
I, Hossein Attar Jannesar Nobari (حسین عطار جاننثار نوبری), am launching this public petition to request that the Iranian authorities formally explore the possibility of bringing the MICHELIN Guide to Iran and enabling the independent evaluation of Iranian restaurants by MICHELIN Guide inspectors.
The Request
We call on the Presidency of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts of Iran to examine the possibility of establishing communication with the MICHELIN Guide and initiating discussions regarding the inclusion of Iran among the destinations considered for MICHELIN Guide coverage.
Iran possesses a rich and highly diverse culinary heritage. Its regional cuisines, traditional cooking techniques, local ingredients, contemporary chefs, and wide variety of restaurants represent a significant and largely underrecognized part of the country’s cultural and tourism potential.
From northern and southern Iran to Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Khorasan, Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and other regions, Iranian cuisine encompasses a remarkable range of culinary traditions and restaurant experiences.
Yet Iran currently does not have a national MICHELIN Guide selection.
Why Iran Should Be Considered
The MICHELIN Guide has expanded to numerous culinary destinations around the world and works with tourism and destination organizations in various markets. Such partnerships can support destination promotion while the Guide’s restaurant selections remain the responsibility of its independent and anonymous inspectors. (Michelin)
Iran’s inclusion in this process could provide an opportunity to:
- introduce Iranian cuisine and restaurants to a wider international audience;
- strengthen Iran’s potential as a culinary tourism destination;
- increase international visibility for Iranian chefs and restaurant professionals;
- encourage higher standards and greater international engagement within the restaurant industry;
- showcase the diversity of regional Iranian cuisine;
- and give international travelers another way to discover Iran through its food culture.
We Are Not Asking for Guaranteed Stars
This petition does not ask MICHELIN to award stars, Bib Gourmands, or any other distinction to Iranian restaurants in advance.
Instead, we are asking the Iranian authorities to take the necessary diplomatic, tourism and institutional steps to open a dialogue with the MICHELIN Guide and explore the possibility of an official MICHELIN Guide selection in Iran.
Any eventual restaurant selection or distinction should remain entirely subject to MICHELIN’s own methodology and independent evaluation.
The MICHELIN Guide states that its restaurant selections are made by anonymous inspectors using consistent criteria, including the quality of ingredients, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, the personality of the cuisine, and consistency over time. (Intercom)
Our Request to the Iranian Authorities
We respectfully ask the relevant Iranian authorities to:
1. Explore establishing official communication with the MICHELIN Guide regarding the possibility of covering Iran.
2. Evaluate the feasibility of inviting the MICHELIN Guide to consider Iran as a future culinary destination.
3. Facilitate, where appropriate, communication between the MICHELIN Guide, Iranian tourism authorities, and relevant representatives of Iran’s restaurant and hospitality industry.
4. Support the international promotion of Iranian cuisine, culinary traditions, restaurants, and chefs.
5. Take the necessary steps to determine whether the conditions required for an independent MICHELIN Guide selection can be established in Iran.
An Independent Evaluation
The purpose of this petition is not to influence the outcome of any MICHELIN inspection.
On the contrary, we believe that the credibility of the MICHELIN Guide depends on its independent methodology and anonymous inspections. Any restaurant in Iran should therefore be evaluated according to the same standards applied by MICHELIN elsewhere in the world. (Michelin)
The request is simply that Iran should have the opportunity to be considered.
